Inquire

Provides information about entities in a drawing and allows changes to be made in individual entities

The mouse wheel can be used to zoom-in and zoom-out while using this command.

The Inquire command displays the properties of any entity in the drawing. Information about individual entities can also be changed.

After clicking the Inquire button, or typing ? from the keyboard, the cursor changes to a question mark with a crosshair.

Click the crosshair on (or near) the entity you are interested in. LAYOUT will select the entity closest to where you clicked. The selected entity is highlighted in blue and detailed information appears in the information window on the screen.

To end the Inquire command, click the Close button, press Esc, or select another command.

Use the Measure command to measure the distance between two points.

Inquire information about an arc

Information provided

The Inquire command provides the following information about entities:

  • Line Quality
The machining Quality of the entity is shown in the banner of the window.
  • Starting point (x1, y1)
The starting point is relative to the starting point, which is either the lower left corner of the grid, or a point set with the Set Zero command.
  • Ending point (x2, y2)
The ending point is also relative to the zero point.
  • Length
  • Angle
The angle of the line to the X-axis. For an arc, this is the angle between the left-most endpoint and the right-most endpoint.
  • Bow
(Arc or circle only) Although you can "flip" an arc by changing the sign of the bow, you can also use the Arc Flip or Arc Flip Selected commands to do the same thing.
  • Circumference
(Arc or circle only) The circumference information is for the circle that would be formed if the arc were extended to complete a circle.
  • Radius
(Arc or circle only) The radius information is for the circle that would be formed if the arc were extended to complete a circle.
  • Diameter
(Arc or circle only) The diameter information is for the circle that would be formed if the arc were extended to complete a circle.
  • Slope
(Line segment only) The slope (rise divided by run) of the line.
  • Rise
(Line segment only) The distance the line rises in the Y (vertical) direction.
  • Run
(Line segment only) The horizontal distance covered by the line.

Changing or adding an entity

Change the entity by changing one (or more) of three characteristics:

  • Starting point (x1, y1)
  • Ending point (x2, y2)
  • Bow
Changing the Bow will affect the circumference, radius, and diameter.

The edit boxes for these values have white backgrounds to indicate that they can be changed.

After entering a new number in one (or more) of these boxes, two buttons become available on the Inquire window:

Apply the changes to the selected entity.

Add a new entity with these characteristics. (If you only changed the Bow, the new entity will have the same endpoints as the selected entity.)
